Administrative / Biographical History
Burbage and District Industrial Co-operative Society was founded in 1873 at numbers 2-4 Church Street, Burbage. It was initially a Branch of Hinckley Co-operative Society. It merged with Leicester in 1960, who then in turn merged with Leicestershire in 1969 and the Midlands in 1995.
In the Co-operative Directories for 1887 and 1893 no branch stores are listed, only the main store at Church Street, Burbage. In the Directory for 1900 the first branch store appears as being on Windsor Street, Burbage. In the Directory for 1910 a second branch is listed as Strutt Road, Burbage. A third branch is listed in the Directory for 1928 at The Square, Wolvey, Warks. In the Directory for 1932 a forth branch is listed at Sketchley Road, Burbage. In the Directory for 1934 a fifth branch is listed at Main Street, Sharnford. In the Directory for 1957 a sixth branch is listed at 96-98 Wolvey Road, Burbage.
