Administrative / Biographical History
Philip Symes was born on 2 May 1934. He married Joyce Elizabeth Burton (born 3 Aug 1959). Philip and Joyce were appointed to Southern Africa by the London Missionary Society in December 1960, and sailed on 29 Dec. Philip taught mainly science at Inyati High School, Rhodesia [now Zimbabwe], and in Jan 1969 became Principal of the School. Mr & Mrs Symes resigned from the London Missionary Society in 1972.
Inyathi High School (formerly, Inyathi Secondary School and prior to that Inyathi Mission) is the oldest formal educational institution of any kind in Zimbabwe. Inyathi High School is a boarding co-educational secondary school in Inyathi, Zimbabwe, designed along the lines of the traditional British Boarding Public School System. Together with sister institutions of Dombodema High School (Mission) in Plumtree and Tennyson Hlabangane High School (formerly known as Hope Fountain Mission) in Hope Fountain, Inyathi High School is privately owned by the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) which is itself an offshoot of the London Missionary Society (LMS).
