BODELWYDDAN ESTATE PAPERS

Deeds relating to the Bodelwyddan estate in Flintshire and Denbighshire, 1731-1925, including coal, lead, ironstone and fire clay mines, and deeds relating to Cardiganshire lead mines, 1859-1868; estate papers, 1861-1929, including correspondence and rentals; family papers, 1830-1898; and abstracts of title relating to the Bodelwyddan, Pengwern, Bodidris and Bodeugan estates, 1808-1918.

Bodelwyddan was the seat of the Humphreys family until it was purchased in the late 17th century by Sir William Williams (1643-1700), Speaker of the House of Commons. The estate descended to his second son, Sir John Williams of Bodelwyddan and Chester, who was created a baronet in 1798. The estate then passed to his son, Sir John Hay Williams (1794-1859), 2nd baronet, who considerably enlarged the house in the early 19th century but died without male issue. The title and estate then passed to Sir Hugh Williams, from where it descended in the male line. According to the 1873 return of owners of land, Sir Hugh Williams owned an estimated 9,371 acres in Wales (all in Denbighshire and Flintshire), with an estimated rental of £9,371. The estate was sold by the family in 1925.
