Papers of Owen Hughes, Holyhead

Scope and Content

A manuscript copy, by a Richard Morris of Llanallgo, Anglesey, of the Welsh translation of A relation of the fearful estate of Francis Spira in the year 1548, a work originally published anonymously, but subsequently attributed to Nathaniel Bacon. The Welsh version is entitled, Hanes cywir am gyflwr arswydus Francis Spira : ar ol iddo ef droi yn wrthgiliwr oddiwrth y grefydd brotestanaidd at Babyddiaeth.

Two account books of Owen Hughes including details in particular relating to the leasing of land on Mynydd Twr, Holyhead to various people from 1845-1851. Includes details of an arrangement to build a Sunday school for Congregationalists, and of family deeds. Also, a book of carols and religious songs to be sung in a vigil.

No biographical information was available regarding Owen Hughes of Holyhead, at time of compilation of description, other than that he died in 1853 and was an ancestor of the scholar, Alfred Owen Hughes Jarman of Bangor.
