Administrative / Biographical History

The Engineering Employers' West Midlands Association was originally formed in 1897 as the local association of the Engineering Employers' Federation for Birmingham, Wolverhampton and district. Similar associations were to exist in the West Midlands region for Coventry, North Staffordshire and Shropshire. The Birmingham Association subsequently shed and then reacquired responsibility for EEF member firms in Wolverhampton and became known simply as the Birmingham and District Engineering Employers' Association. In 1962-3 the Shropshire local association was absorbed by Birmingham. The Birmingham and District Association was renamed the Engineering Employers' West Midlands Association (EEWMA) between February 1963 and February 1964. The Coventry and District Engineering Employers' Association was merged with the West Midlands Association in 1984. The West Midlands Association now forms the largest of the EEF's thirteen regional Associations, with over 1200 companies in its membership.
