Sir William Mitchell Acworth 1850-1925
Acworth was educated at Uppingham School and Christ Church, Oxford. He was amember of the London County Council, 1889-1892. Acworth was also UnionistCandidate for Keighley Division of West Riding, 1906, 1910, 1911. He was amember of many Royal Commissions and Committees on British Railways,including the Royal Commission of Enquiry into Canadian Railways, 1916; SouthRhodesian Railways, 1918. He was Chairman of Committee on Indian Railways,1921. Acworth reported on Austrian Railways for the League of Nations, 1923,and also on German Railways for the Reparations Commission, 1924. He was amember of Council of the Royal Economic Society and of the Institute ofTransport, and was Director of the Underground Electric Railways of London,Limited, and other companies. Acworth was knighted in 1921.
