Draft Precept for a return of the inhabitants of Shordley

Scope and Content

Draft Precept by virtue of an Act of Parliament entitled An Act for raising money by a Poll and otherwise towards the maintenances of the present war. Parry and Thomas Shore of Shordley, Flintshire are to make a return at the house of Ellis Edwards of Bangor, Flintshire of all the inhabitants of the township of Shordley and to rate and assess them.

A precept can be described as an authoritative command to do some particular act. Although this document is undated and unsigned, it most probably belongs to the 17th century, possibly to the period of the English Civil War.

Shordley is a township located in the county of Flint.

The document was found in a printed book acquired by the Bodleian Library in 1949 and forwarded to the Library of the University of Wales Bangor by the Keeper of Western Manuscripts.
