Colwyn Bay and Colwyn Urban District Council, records of

Scope and Content

Colwyn Bay and Colwyn Urban District Council (UDC), Denbighshire, was established under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1894 and administered the towns of Colwyn Bay and Old Colwyn. The Council consisted of councillors and a chairman, elected for three years. UDCs originally took over responsibility for local sanitation from the local sanitary authorities and their responsibilities included sanitary services, sewerage, refuse collection, housing, streets, cemeteries (in this case Bronynant Cemetery), libraries, parks, controls on buildings such as petrol stations, and licensing of public entertainments. UDCs were administered by a number of committees and by appointed officers including a Clerk, Treasurer, Medical Officer of Health, Surveyor, Rating Officer and Sanitary Inspector. In 1923, the parish of Llysfaen was added to the urban district. The district was renamed Colwyn Bay urban district in 1926. Colwyn Bay UDC was superseded by Colwyn Bay Borough Council in 1934. Colwyn Bay Gas Company was formed in 1883 and supplied street lighting. It was purchased by the UDC in 1901.
