Scope and Content

Correspondence with English poetry editor William Cookson, who founded the magazine Agenda and Agenda Editions. This contains various references to a planned Agenda anthology to be published by Carcanet [which did not ultimately appear until 1994], including references to: Schmidt's initial proposal of the project in 1975; progress on the selection of contents by Cookson and his fellow editor Peter Dale; and the delay in submitting the typescript, initially planned for publication in 1977 (see /2-12, /27 and /30-31). The other principal topic of the correspondence is Peter Dale's One another: a sonnet sequence, produced as a joint imprint by Agenda Editions and Carcanet Press in 1978, including references to: plans for the book and progress towards publication; a planned review by Emma Fisher in PN Review 11; sales; and Cookson's purchase in 1980 of unsold copies (see /12-22, /24-27 and /36-40).

Other topics covered in the correspondence include: the preparation of a special autumn issue of Agenda in 1975, devoted to six poets including Davie, Hamburger and Sisson (/1-3); an article on Pound by Brian Cheadle forwarded to Cookson by Schmidt; Cookson's review of Michael Alexander's The poetic achievement of Ezra Pound published in PN Review 15 (/28-33); and the possibility of Carcanet publishing a new edition of Arthur Cooper's Li po and tu fu, recommended by Cookson (/34-35).
