Scope and Content

Correspondence with American poet, essayist and editor, Donald Hall, relating to: Hall's advice on American distribution of PN Review; his poem 'Kicking the Leaves' (a photocopy of which, taken from the New York Times of 17 October 1975 is enclosed in /12), Schmidt's decision not to accept this because of its prior publication in America; Hall's thoughts on the absence of English women poets in PN Review; Schmidt's editorial policy, which he claims is based on the poetry he considers best, not on sexual or racial principles, and Hall's conviction that magazine editors do in fact base their choices on physiological principles; Hall's thoughts on the separateness of English and American literature; a piece by Hall about PN Review in American magazine Parnassus, including remarks about Charles Sisson which led to a disagreement between the two writers; Sisson's intention to respond to Hall's comments in the editorial to PN Review 16; [D.J.] Enright's Oxford book of contemporary verse 1945 to 1980, and Hall's low opinion of Enright's poetry and criticism.
