Scope and Content

Correspondence with English poet and translator Jonathan Griffin relating to: [John Ashbery's] Self-portrait in a convex mirror (1977); Schmidt's feeling in 1977 that his own poetry has dried up; the publication of some of Griffin's poems in Montemora 3; Schmidt's enthusiasm on attending a production of Hofmannsthal's The deep man translated by Griffin; the possibility of Carcanet publishing the play along with the prose essay 'Letter to Lord Chandos', which was abandoned due to the play's acceptance by another publisher to whom it had been sent previously; the possibility of Carcanet publishing Griffin's translation of Clarière by Jean Mambrino; various visits to Manchester by Griffin to see plays at the Royal Exchange; and two brief references to Helder [Macedo and E.M. de Melo e Castro]'s Contemporary Portuguese poetry: an anthology in English (1978).
