Greatorex Photographs

Scope and Content

A collection of architectural photographs, largely of churches, monastic buildings, and later structures on monastic sites, in the British Isles, formed and probably partly taken by Canon Edward Greatorex (ca.1823-1900).

Approximately 1,260 of the photographs relate to sites in England, 240 to Scotland, 32 to Ireland, 18 to Wales and 8 to the Isle of Man. Some are the work of commercial photographers, but a large proportion of those relating to buildings inEngland were probably taken privately, possibly by Greatorex himself. The prints vary in size from ca.3 x 2 inch up to 12 x 10 inch. Many are albumen prints.

Administrative / Biographical History

Edward Greatorex became a minor canon of Durham Cathedral in 1849, and held the offices of sacristan 1849-1862 and precentor 1862-1872, when he became rector of Croxdale, Co. Durham.

Arrangement

The photographs are mounted on sheets of board, and are grouped by country. The English section is arranged (broadly) by county. The numbering is by page (i.e. each side of each sheet of mounting board) and then item.
