Caernarfonshire Quarter Sessions, Gamekeepers' Deputations

Scope and Content

Gamekeepers' Deputations, mostly copies, for Caernarfonshire, 1812-1888; and appointments of stewards, 1828-1871.

Administrative / Biographical History

Gamekeepers' Deputations record the appointment of gamekeepers. The Act For The Better Preservation of Game 1707, and subsequent Acts, stated that one gamekeeper could be appointed per manor, and that every deputation would have to be registered with the Clerk of the Peace. A stamp duty of £2 2s per year was charged, in addition to the 10s 6d annual cost of the gamekeeper's licence. The laws were further reinforced in Caernarfonshire under the Act for Gamekeepers in Wales 1819.
