Administrative / Biographical History

The engineering company Laird (Anglesey) Ltd was formed [c. 1968] incorporating the Beaumaris and Llangefni factories of Saunders-Roe (SARO) and the Birkenhead shipbuilders Cammell Laird. SARO originated as a boatbuilding company and became involved in aircraft manufacture during the Second World War as part of the Gloster Aircraft company. At this time the company opened a factory at Fryars in Llanfaes, Anglesey, converting and maintaining Catalina flying boats and launching them onto Fryars Bay. The company later moved into other military hardware and civilian vehicles. SARO and Laird contracts included amphibious and other marine craft, tanks, radar equipment, bridges, trackways, buses, tankers, containers, railway wagons, refuse collection vehicles, and masts for the Festival of Britain in 1951. The company, which is now (2003) known as FAUN Municipal Vehicles Ltd, took and collected a considerable number of photographs to record its activities.
