Administrative / Biographical History

The estate of Lennox Castle in Lennoxtown, 13 miles North of Glasgow, was bought by Glasgow Parish Council in  1927  to build a hospital for people with learning disabilities, and which was to be called  Lennox Castle Hospital. Patients then were known as mental defectives. The Hospital included the mansion house of Lennox Castle built in the 1840s. It was regarded as a model of forward thinking in its time in the care and treatment of people with learning disabilities. At its fullest the hospital housed over 1200 patients. In the 1960s questions were being asked about the role and effect of institutional care including Lennox Castle. In 1993, following the Care in the Community Act, patients began being discharged into the community and the hospital finally closed in April  2002 . As well as long stay patients, the longest recorded was there for 60 years, there were members of staff who worked a whole career in the hospital. An example of a long stay patient would be Jimmy Lappin, who was in the hospital between 1938 and 2000; an example of a long stay staff member would be Nurse Nan Douglas who worked in the hospital from 1930 to 1974.
