Scope and Content

Note. The original file seems to have been broken up and the cover destroyed. Letters may have been removed for the Josephine Butler Letter Collection as both Josephine Butler and Mrs Booth were closely associated with Mr WT Stead's investigation for the Pall Mall Gazette articles.

Papers are in a slip-cover made from a sheet of 1885 newspaper - across outside is written in the familiar blue pencil - 'Circulars etc. Stead Revelation 2nd File'. Further note, in ink, at the top of the slip-cover, 'These are second copies of some of the papers in the Stead File. 9 iv 96'.

* Circular letter to certain named persons by HJ Wilson, asking them for any information about the Pall Mall Gazette articles; blank petition form.

* Stead and Booth Defence Fund. Statement of Accounts 1885-1886; notice of a meeting to be addressed by Miss Ellice Hopkins and others;

* Mr William Thomas Stead. The Exposer of Criminal Vice in the Metropolis. Is It Right That He Should be in Jail? An Appeal to the Men and Women of England (undated., c.1885, 8pp).
