The position of Chief Administrative Nursing Officer was created in 1974 when the Greater Glasgow Health Board came into existence. Parallel positions were created for a Chief Administrative Dental Officer, Chief Administrative Medical Officer and Chief Administrative Pharmaceutical Officer. Following the reorganisation of the NHS and the creation of NHS Trusts in 1992/93 the position of CANO was replaced by that of Nursing Adviser to the Board. The latter position was abolished in 2004.
