Scope and Content

One handwritten volume, which includes minutes of the Committee from 3 November 1888 to 19 June 1894. The volume includes newspaper cuttings on some of the meetings along with letters, and notes referred to in the meetings pasted onto pages. A copy of the 1892 Rules of the Co-operative Newspaper Society Ltd is pasted inside the front cover. Subjects discussed include the running of the Co-operative News and printing work done for other organisations, sales of newspapers and advertising, publicity, organisation of employees’ picnics and social events, news coverage of and attendance at co-operative events and correspondence with clients. Loose papers: the report of the Decorative Art Journals Company Limited for half year ended 31 December 1891, an unsigned letter to Mr Lander dated 10 June 1891 about his correspondence in the Co-operative News, a parcels post label from the London Society for the Abolition of Compulsory Vaccination, addressed to Henry Pitman in Manchester, with shorthand notes in pencil on the reverse, two items relating to George Jacob Holyoake’s concern about the Co-operative Newspaper Society’s decision not to allow profit sharing by the workers. Co-operative News cuttings on the Shareholders Meeting 1 November 1890 and on Holyoake’s feelings on the subject, a letter from Mr Bamford to George Jacob Holyoake dated 24 October 1891 concerning Holyoake’s proposal to allow postal voting to ensure that all shareholders get an equal say in questions of principle and policy, with Holyoake’s reply.
