Scope and Content

One handwritten volume, which includes minutes of the General Board, Executive Committee, subcommittee, shareholders quarterly and annual meetings, from 31 December 1918 to 26 January 1921. The volume includes newspaper cuttings on some of the meetings along with letters, and notes referred to in the meetings pasted onto pages. Subjects discussed include the running of the Co-operative News and printing work done for other organisations, sales of newspapers and advertising, publicity, organisation of employees’ picnics and social events, news coverage of and attendance at co-operative events and correspondence with clients. Loose papers: notice of shareholders meeting 11 December 1920, letter dated 9 December 1920 from Long Eaton Working Men’s Co operative Society saying the Society is recommending to the members an increase in shareholding in the National Co operative Publishing Society, letter dated 3 June 1919 from the Sheerness Economical Industrial and Provident Society protesting at the amount of space allotted in the Co-operative News to the Society’s centenary celebrations, letter from the Barnsley British Co-operative Society dated 3 December 1920 about the objectionable cartoons appearing in the Co-operative News, letter dated 18 June 1920 from the Newspaper Society in London concerning the Typographical Association wages demand, partial amendment of rules, undated, of the Co-operative Newspaper Society amending rule 8(1) signed by three members of the Society and the Secretary, two letters dated 27 February and 3 March 1919 from Agnes Maxwell (wife of William Maxwell) explaining that her husband’s accident in France has left him unable to travel to meetings or to work and thanking Thomas Adam and Mr Blakeborough for their letter which touched him more deeply than any other he had received.
