Funeral of Cecil John Rhodes, April 1902

Scope and Content

An album containing prints measuring approximately 285 x 220 mm. with letterpress captions pasted onto the bottoms of the prints. The majority of the prints are signed in the negative. With the album is a booklet containing the order of service, the whole contained in a folder bound in hide. Rhodes died on 26 March 1902 and, after a period of lying in state in Cape Town, the body was transported thence by train to Bulawayo where it arrived on the morning of 8 April. For the rest of the day it lay in state in the Bulawayo Drill Hall and there, the following morning, the first portion of the burial service was read. A funeral procession then followed the coffin to the outskirts of the town, returning the next day, 10 April, to the grave at World's View where the remainder of the service was read by the Bishop of Mashonaland.
