Administrative / Biographical History

Formed under the Local Government Act 1888, Merioneth County Council (or Merionethshire County Council), based in Dolgellau, Merionethshire, took over many administrative duties of the Court of Quarter Sessions, such as responsibility for roads, bridges, county rates, county buildings, the police force, and licensing. The Local Government Act 1929 transferred responsibility for public assistance from the Boards of Guardians to the county councils. Other responsibilities relating to public health, agriculture, mental deficiency, highways and planning were transferred to the councils between 1919 and 1947. With the establishment of the National Health Service and the Welfare State, the county councils lost responsibility for health and public assistance. In 1974, as part of the restructuring of local government, most of Merionethshire was amalgamated with Caernarfonshire and Anglesey to create the new Gwynedd County Council, with Edeirnion rural district being added to Clwyd County Council.
