The volume is entitled A Survey of the Lands, Tenements and Hereditaments in the County of Lancaster, late belonging to Edward Chetham of Castleton, Esq., deceased, taken in the year 1770. This concerns property and tenants in Salford, Pendlebury, Broughton, Kersall, Chetham, Crumsal, Spotland, Newton, Droylsden, Failsworth, Manchester, Turton and Moston. There is the following note on folio 35v: The Estimate of the within Estates made in the year 1770 and compleated on the 15th Day of September by us - R. Lang, John Taylor, Thomas Smedley. The survey was almost certainly made for the executors of Edward Chetham.

Edward Chetham (c 1689-1769) was born in Manchester, the son of Edward Chetham. He was educated at Manchester School and at Sidney College, Cambridge, where he was admitted as a pensioner (the second rank of student) in September 1707. He went to Gray's Inn in May 1709 and later became a barrister at law.
When Samuel Chetham of Castleton, High Sheriff of Lancashire, died in 1745, he left a widow and a brother, Humphrey Chetham of London (1680-1749), who was his heir and administrator. On the death of Humphrey in 1749, Edward Chetham, who may have been another brother, was his sole surviving executor, and probably his heir. From 1749 Edward became known as Edward Chetham of Castleton, Esquire, and in July 1750 he resigned from the Deputy Stewardship of Macclesfield Courts. Edward Chetham died sometime between 9 February and 15 March 1769. In 1773 his Law Library, along with the library of Humphrey Chetham, were sold by L. Davis.
