MS.Add.6095: Extracts from William Cole's manuscripts, in English and Latin, c. 1904, 1 volume, 72 folios. There are copies of letters from W.H. Ewin to [William] Bird, 29 March 1776 and 15 November 1776 (fos 13 and 14), and a copy of a letter from William Cole to Samuel Meeke, 13 December 1775 (fo. 52). There are indexes on fos 64v-70 and miscellaneous notes on fos 70v and 71.

Book 'K', c. 1903, 60 folios. Miscellaneous notes, among them extracts from lease books of St John's College, Cambridge (fos 33-38v). There are indexes on fos 54v-60.

Book 'L', c. 1904, 60 folios. Miscellaneous entries, among them notes on the Royal Oak, Cambridge (fos 1-17), and notes on title deeds regarding the Cardinal's Cap (fos 44-51). Fos 51v-59 are blank.

Book 'M', in English and Latin, c. 1904, 84 folios. Notes on Cambridge victuallers, including a copy of a letter from the privy council to the vice-chancellor and rectors of Cambridge University, 31 March 1631 (fo. 8).

MS.Add.6144 Notes on English printers, in English and Latin, c. 1913, 1 box-file, 243 folios. The papers include a letter from S. Coombes, 19 July 1913 (fo. 238), and the certificate of enrolment of Chawner as a member of Leipzig University, signed by L.C. Thiersch, 18 April 1877 (fo. 241).

Administrative / Biographical History

George Chawner (1854-1914) was born on 16 November 1854, the son of William, vicar of Crich, Derbyshire. He was educated at Rossall, before entering King's College, Cambridge, in 1873 (B.A., 1877; M.A., 1880), where he became a fellow in 1878. He was classical lecturer at the university, 1879-1896, and King's College Librarian, 1896-1914. He died on 27 April 1914.
