Under the Local Government Act, 1888 (51 & 52 Vict. c. 41) responsibility for the county police force and appointment of legal officers such as the Clerk of the Peace and justices' clerks was shared between the County Council and Quarter Sessions acting through a Standing Joint Committee. The Committee was replaced in 1965 by the Police Committee (see CC1/38).
