COUNTY RECORDS JOINT COMMITTEE/COUNTY RECORDS COMMITTEE

Scope and Content

The Committee was a joint committee of the County Council and Oxfordshire Quarter Sessions. It was appointed, in response to the Local Government (Clerks) Act, 1931 (21 & 22 Geo. V c. 45) and the Local Government Act, 1933 (23 & 24 Geo. V c. 51), to provide for the preservation and care of County Council and Quarter Sessions records. In 1963 the Committee was reconstituted as a County Council committee (with some Quarter Sessions members) to take advantage of the powers conferred under the Local Government (Records) Act, 1962 (10 & 11 Eliz. II c. 56) which permitted local authorities to promote adequate use of their records and to acquire by gift, purchase or deposit (non-official) records of local interest.
