Statutory committee appointed under the Police Act 1964 (c. 48) which aimed at clearer lines of reponsibility and more consistent management of the police by county and county borough police authorities. Chief constables (as well as deputy and assistant chief constables) were to be appointed with the approval of the Home Secretary. The Police Committee included some magistrates and replaced the Standing Joint Committee. In April 1968 the separate Police Authorities of Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire along with those of Oxford and Reading were amalgamated to form the Thames Valley Police Authority.
