LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACT COMMITTEE

Scope and Content

Appointed under the Local Government Act, 1894 (56 & 57 Vict. c. 73) which imposed on county councils the duty of bringing the Act into operation including powers to determine the areas and boundaries of the new administrative districts. The Act completed the process of local government reform in the counties by creating two further layers in the administrative hierarchy: urban and rural district councils (UDCs and RDCs) replacing urban and rural sanitary authorities and parish coucils and meetings. The committee was discontinued and its functions transferred to the General Purposes Committee in 1919 (see CC1/5).
