Administrative / Biographical History

S.O. Davies was born Stephen Owen Davies in 1886 and after working in the coal mines became the Miners' Agent (1918-1934) at Dowlais under the South Wales Miners' Federation (SWMF). He was a member of the SWMF Executive Committee 1924-1930 and was also the South Wales representative of the Miners' Federation of Great Britain (MFGB) Executive Council. He later became the Vice-President of the SWMF (1924-1933). S.O. Davies was the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) sponsored MP for Merthyr Tydfil and held it continuously from 1934 until his death in 1972 for the Labour Party 1934-1960 and the Independant Labour Party 1970-1972. He was a member of Merthyr Tydfil Borough Council 1931-1949 and Mayor 1945-1946.
