Papers of the Madan family, consisting of:  

• Correspondence between Judth and Martin Madan, 1723-50
• Letters from Judith Madan to her daughter, Maria Cowper, 1745-69
• Copies by Maria Cowper of letters and papers of Judith Madan, mainly concerning the terms of her will, 1776-81
• Letters from Maria Cowper to her mother, Judith Madan, and her sister, Penelope Maitland
• Volumes of letters, mainly to Penelope Maitland, 1780-94, with miscellaneous family papers
• Diaries of Penelope Maitland, 1787-97, 1800, with 'record' of events, 1787-97, by Maria Cowper, begun in 1700
• Recipe book of Helen Maitland, compiled and given to her by her mother-in-law, Penelope Maitland, 1786
• Household account book, 1781-3
• Poems of Judith Madan, some autograph and some copied by her daughter, Penelope Maitland, 1717-19
• Miscellaneous verse by members of the Madan and Cowper families, 18th century
• Commonplace book begun by Judith Madan in 1769 and continued from 1782 by her daughter Penelope Maitland
• Volumes entitled 'Some observations on parts of the Holy Scriptures - principally intended for the use of the author', Maria Cowper, begun in 1780
• Volumes of notes by Penelope Maitland on sermons, with prayers and meditations
• Two similar volumes containing prayers and meditations
• Miscellaneous religious writings by members of the Madan and Cowper families, 1790-1805

The members of the Madan family represented in this collection are Judith Madan, ne Cowper,(1702-1781), poet, and Martin Madan (1700-1756), Lieutenant-Colonel and MP. Also included are Judith's daughters Maria Frances Cecilia Cowper (1726-1797), poet, and Penelope Maitland (1730-1805), and Penelope's daughter-in-law, Helen Maitland.
