Administrative / Biographical History

The first General Election of 1974 took place in February, the ConservativeParty won 11,872,180 votes (37.9 per cent), the Labour Party 11,645,616 votes(37.2 per cent), the Liberal Party won 6,059,519 votes (19.3 per cent), the Scottish NationalParty won 633,180 votes (2.0 per cent), Plaid Cmyru 171,374 votes (0.6 per cent), theNational Front won 76,865 votes (0.2 per cent) and the Communist Party won 32,743votes (0.1 per cent).

As no party had a conclusive majority, a second election was held in Octoberof the same year. The Labour Party won the election with 11,457,079 votes(39.2 per cent). The Conservative Party gained 10,462,565 votes (35.8 per cent), the LiberalParty gained 5,346,704 votes (18.3 per cent), the Scottish National Party 839,617votes (2.9 per cent), Plaid Cymru 166,321 votes (0.6 per cent), the National Front 113,843votes (0.4 per cent) and the Communist Party 113,843 votes (0.1 per cent).
