Administrative / Biographical History

These papers relate to the legal and personal affairs of John Whitney and of his descendants. John Whitney was a Swansea apothecary. He was admitted as Burgess of Swansea in 1746. John married Hannah Davies and the collection includes some records relating to her brothers Lewis, Owen and Thomas and Thomas' wife Martha. John Whitney died c1756 and Hannah died c1780. The archive includes papers concerning the affairs of children of John and Hannah, namely Ann, who died c1793, Eleanor, who married David Hopkins and Martha who died c1820. Many of the papers concern the estate of Martha Whitney.

This collection forms part of the Royal Institution of South Wales Collection and was transferred from the Archives at University of Wales Swansea to West Glamorgan Archive Service in April 2004.
