Papers relating to a projected supplement to Open air sculpture in Britain

Scope and Content

Papers relating to Strachan's research for and work on a planned revised second edition of Open air sculpture in Britain; this project was subsequently recast as a shorter volume to supplement the original, but was not ultimately published despite Strachan having undertaken a considerable amount of research and drafted most of the volume's contents. The material here primarily consists of correspondence carried out by Strachan in connection with his work on the supplement, including letters exchanged with individual sculptors, galleries, universities, colleges, local authorities, arts councils, other arts organisations and companies. Of individual sculptors represented in the correspondence, there are single letters from David Kemp, Nigel Lloyd, Keith McCarter, Paul Mason, Denis Mitchell, Peter Randall-Page, Simon Thomas, Peter Thursby, Jill Tweed and Ben Wilson; two letters from Diane Gorvin; and four letters from Wendy Taylor. There are also typescript drafts of most of Strachan's content for the new volume.

Arrangement

Where correspondence was found in original bundles, these divisions have been retained. However, there was a large pile of loose material, which is now listed at WJS/18/1/2/2/6-7 and is arranged chronologically. The various draft pieces of content for the volume have also been bundled together as an item (WJS/18/1/2/2/8).
