Papers relating to Towards the lost domain

Scope and Content

A series of papers relating to Henri Alain-Fournier: towards the lost domain; letters from London, 1905, translated by Strachan and published by Carcanet Press in 1986. It was Christopher Hewett, founder of the Taranman Gallery and Press, who initiated the project and invited Strachan to translate the letters; however, Carcanet Press took over the publication after Hewett's death in 1983. The papers include both those generated by Hewett in the early stages of the project, and subsequently those created by Strachan himself. They include copies of original French sources (both published and manuscript), transcripts of the sources, typescript drafts of the volume, correspondence and research papers, background material and papers relating to the book's reception.

This material was very disordered, although some original groupings (e.g. the typescript material, and parts of the correspondence) existed; the current arrangement is therefore partly based on original order, and the rest of the papers have been divided according to which stage of the planning and publication process they represent.
