Photographs of modern sculpture

Scope and Content

A series of photographs of modern sculpture, which were presumably accumulated over many years by Strachan to illustrate articles, lectures and books, including Towards sculpture: drawings and maquettes, from Rodin to Oldenburg (1976) and Open air sculpture in Britain (1984). Most of the photographs are of sculpture, either in the open air, in galleries or studios, but there are also some photographs of sculptors' maquettes and drawings. In most cases these are original photographs, but in some cases photographic postcards and photocopies are included; there is also a small quantity of negatives and transparencies. The largest groupings of material relate to work by Henry Moore and Wendy Taylor, but numerous other sculptors are also represented. The photographs themselves are undated, but the sculpture represented spans most of the twentieth century up to the 1980s.

Arrangement largely follows original order, although much of the material in WJS/13/3/6 (work by various sculptors) was originally loose and has been bundled together for convenience.
