Scope and Content

Letters from and papers relating to Geoffrey Hamilton Rhoades (1898-1980), British painter, engraver and teacher, comprising 16 letters from Rhoades (many of them illustrated with watercolour and pen and ink sketches); hand drawn and coloured "map of Noon's Farm, Oxenwood" by Rhoades [who was staying there in 1933]; one photocopy of a letter from Rhoades; and two typescript transcripts of letters from Rhoades made by Strachan (originals included). The file also includes: catalogue for an exhibition of Rhoades's work at Sally Hunter Fine Art (London), April 1987; invitation to a private view of a Geoffrey Rhoades retrospective exhibition at the Mall Galleries (London), August 1982; and carbon typescript list of fly-leaf decorations by Rhoades on books presented to Walter Strachan as Christmas presents.

Topics covered in the correspondence include: Rhoades's thought's on W.R. Lethaby's Form in civilization [1922]; his advice on Strachan's drawing; social visits to Edward Bawden at Christmas 1939, one of which was also attended by Robert Graves, [John] Aldridge, and refugees from Spain and Germany; Strachan's purchase of a painting by Bawden in 1940; Rhoades's response to Strachan's Apollinaire to Aragon (1948); his thoughts on André Lhote's Treatise on landscape painting, after reading Strachan's translation of the work (published in 1950); his thoughts on Strachan's translation of work by Cesare Pavese; and his response to Hermann Hesse's The prodigy, after reading Strachan's translation of the novel.
