Papers relating to: Strachan's gift of livres d'artiste to the Taylor Institution, Oxford; his Le livre d'artiste: a catalogue of the W.J. Strachan gift to the Taylor Institution (Oxford: Ashmolean Museum and Taylor Institution, 1987); and the exhibition of the collection which took place at the Ashmolean Museum in 1987. This material consists of three items:
- /1 File of correspondence and papers. The correspondence is primarily with Giles Barber, Librarian at the Taylor, but also includes letters exchanged with other staff at the Ashmolean Museum, as well as other individuals (including a note from Pierre Lecuire). The correspondence relates to: details of the material Strachan presented to the Taylor Institution; arrangements for its transfer; the preparation of his catalogue (including issues like permissions requests); and the 1987 exhibition. The file also includes: two heavily edited and marked up typescript lists of the material donated to the Taylor Institution; Strachan's notes and manuscript drafts; and two typescript drafts of his essay 'The genesis and growth of the collection', which appeared in the catalogue.
- /2 Large hardback volume labelled "Livre d'artiste". This is a reference resource created by Strachan during his research into the livre d'artiste, and contains information about artists who produced livres d'artiste, arranged alphabetically by artist. Contains handwritten entries (some biographical information but mostly details of publications) by Strachan, as well as typescript and printed information which has been pasted in. There are also numerous loose inserts. The volume is undated, but was probably created and updated over many years.
- /3 Typescript notes identified as Strachan's notes on livres d'artiste.
