Scope and Content

Material relating to Strachan's major anthology of modern French poetry in translation, Apollinaire to Aragon, as follows:

  • /1 Bound manuscript: the original French poetry texts written out by Strachan by hand.
  • /2 Bound proofs: page proofs of the anthology, stamped as second proof; corrected by hand in pencil throughout.
  • /3 First edition of the publication: Apollinaire to Aragon: thirty modern French poets, translated with an introductory essay by W.J. Strachan (London: Methuen, 1948). Signed by Strachan and dated May 1948. With two loose inserts: a rough mock-up of the jacket design, and a press cutting of a photograph of Pierre Jean Jouve.
