Correspondence relating to sculpture

Scope and Content

A series of correspondence between Strachan and others which relates in some way to sculpture, along with some associated documents. This was largely generated during Strachan's research for Towards sculpture (1976), Open air sculpture in Britain (1984), and a projected follow-up volume to the latter, which was not ultimately published. Correspondents include collectors and patrons of sculpture, gallery curators, other writers on art and various organisations. A small number of sculptors are also represented; these are largely sculptors whom Strachan approached or planned to include in one of his books, but whose work was not ultimately represented. However, there is some correspondence with Robert Koenig, Michael Lyons, Keith McCarter and John Newling, who were all represented in Open air sculpture in Britain.

Topics covered in the correspondence include: the supply of photographs of sculpture (particularly open-air sculpture) for Strachan's use; plans for him and others to photograph open-air sculpture in situ; copyright permissions; exchanges of information about open-air sculpture and its locations; the supply of information about sculptors' drawings; and Strachan's search for funding for Open air sculpture in Britain. Material consists of in-letters or two-way correspondence unless stated otherwise in the list below, which is largely arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent, although some original bundles and related papers have been placed at the end of the alphabetical sequence.

Arrangement

The letters, which were in no discernable order, have now been arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent or institution, reflecting the way other correspondence in the collection was organised by Walter or Geoffrey Strachan. In three instances, original bundles of letters with various correspondents were kept together with treasury tags or staples; these are listed at the end of the sequence, as are letters from unidentified correspondents and miscellaneous notes by Strachan.
