Administrative / Biographical History

The British Motor Corporation Joint Shop Stewards' Committee evolved in 1952 from the Nuffield Combine Shop Stewards' Committee. A meeting in 1967 between Leyland-Triumph and BMC shop stewards led to the formation of the British Leyland (Motor Corporation Combined) Trade Union Committee in 1968.

Archivist's Note

The archive has been catalogued to file level. A copy of this catalogue is available in paper format in the Centre's searchroom. The file list was compiled by Dr Steven Tolliday, who arranged and worked on the papers before they were deposited in the Centre. The Centre also holds the R.A. Etheridge papers (MSS.202) , the Peter Nicholas papers (MSS.309) and Paul Worm Automotive Collection (MSS.356) , both of which include material on shop stewards' organisation in the car industry.

Custodial History

The archive was deposited in the Centre in 1981 by Mr L. Gurl through the good offices of Dr S. Tolliday. Details of this deposit and subsequent accruals are listed below.

Accruals

  • 18th September 1981 : 26 files as listed by Dr Tolliday, unaccompanied van collection from Dr Tolliday who had collected them from Mr L. Gurl at Cowley [indefinite loan];
  • 21st June 1995 : 9 archive boxes of L. Gurl papers delivered by L. Gurl [indefinite loan];
  • 15th December 1995 : 1 box of memoirs by post [indefinite loan].
