Correspondence with William Greenwell by year

Scope and Content

13 envelopes which have been previously organized by year of correspondence, where known. There are 2 further envelopes of correspondence where the year of writing is unknown. There are an estimated 347 letters in this series. The correspondence is predominantly from Greenwell to Rolleston, although a few are copies of letters Rolleston sent to Greenwell, or from other individuals. The material primarily regards British archaeology and their mutual interest in excavating British barrows. This resulted in the 1877 publication British Barrows: a record of the examination of sepulchral mounds in various parts of England by William Greenwell together with description of figures of skulls, general remarks on prehistoric crania and an appendix, by George Rolleston.
