Administrative / Biographical History

The Amalgamated Marine Workers' Union was formed on the 1st January 1922 by the amalgamation of the British Seafarers' Union and the National Union of Ships' Stewards, Cooks, Butchers and Bakers. The latter had been formed in Liverpool in 1909 by Joe Cotter. In 1925 the Amalgamated Marine Workers' Union and the National Sailors and Firemen's Union made an unsuccessful attempt to amalgamate. This was followed by conflict between the two unions. In 1926 legal action was brought against the Amalgamated Marine Workers' Union and the 1922 amalgamation was declared void. An injunction was granted restraining it from using funds or property attributable to the National Union of Ships' Stewards, Cooks, Butchers and Bakers. This financial blow brought about the collapse of the Amalgamated Marine Workers' Union in 1927 and its members were mostly taken on by the National Union of Seamen.
