Poor Law Papers

Scope and Content

The documents found can be roughly split into two sections - those for settlement and removal, and those for bastardy cases. However, there are also a mix of other documents that relate to the poor law.

Many removal orders appear as a result of appeals made by the parish to which the paupers were being sent, and the result of the appeal is often appended.

Administrative / Biographical History

Before 1834, the poor were managed by the parish and its officials, mainly the churchwardens and overseers of the poor. Money was collected from local residents through the poor rates and used to look after the sick, elderly, widowed, unemployed or destitute. After 1834, parishes were grouped together to form unions, each run by a Board of Guardians. The Justices of the Peace, meeting in Quarter Sessions, supervised poor relief across the county.

Custodial History

The original Quarter Session Rolls had been broken down prior to their accessioning by the Gwynedd Archives Services. These documents, amongst others were extracted from them. The order of the documents in this catalogue should therefore be taken to be the original order of documents when on the roll.
