Administrative / Biographical History

Hugh Fell was appointed secretary of the North West Campaign for Lesbian and Gay Equality (NWCLGE) from its foundation in August 1987. The NWCLGE was responsible for organising numerous events and demonstrations against the enacting of section 28 of the Local Government Act of 1988, adopting 'Never Going Underground' as its slogan. The largest NWCLGE event was held on 20 February 1988, when a national march, rally and festival held in Manchester saw over 20,000 people amass in Albert Square afront Manchester Town Hall before moving onto a festival of entertainment at the Free Trade Hall, Peter Street, Manchester.

Fell was also involved in other LGBT projects and associations local to Manchester. These included; Manchester Gay Media Limited's application for a community radio station licence; the Pink Pages Project, which began as a joint initiative with Manchester City Council to produce material for LGBT visitors to the city; the 'Scene Out' magazine collective; and The Albery Kennedy Trust.
