Returns for Cambridge market, with certificates, tables, memoranda and other papers.

MS.Add.6268: Market returns of corn, 19 October 1802 - 8 February 1812, 212 folios.

MS.Add.6269: Market returns, 9 April 1814 - 1 April 1823, 228 folios. There are certificates of examination and approval of the corn returns. Inside the front cover are notes, and attached inside the back cover are printed documents. On the flyleaf: 'William Dowding Esqre Receiver of Corn Returns, London'.

MS.Add.6270: Market returns, with certificates, 1823-1829. On fo. 1v is a note of papers sent from different merchants, 15-20 August 1824. On fo. 2: 'On The Business of the Corn Act Will. Jacob Esq. Receiver of Corn Returns London'.

MS.Add.6271: Market returns, 10 November 1829 - 12 February 1833, 86 folios.

MS.Add.6272: Market returns of corn, 16 February 1833 - 18 February 1837, 184 folios. On fo. 3 is a list of persons making a declaration, 1833-1838, endorsed by Richard Rowe.

MS.Add.6274: Market returns, 17 April 1841 - 26 December 1846, 230 folios. On fo. 205v is a memorandum by Richard Rowe on the passing of 'An Act to amend the Laws relating to the Importation of Corn'. There are scribbled sums on fo. 230. On fo. 2v: 'Richard Rowe, Inspector'.

MS.Add.6278: Market returns, 3 January 1874 - 15 February 1879, 232 folios. On fos 225v-226v is a table of averages of rye, beans and peas, 3 January 1874 - 7 December 1878. On fo. 1v is a copy of a note by R. Rowe. On fo. 2: 'Begin this New Book January 3rd 1874 Richard Rowe'.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Cambridge Market returns were received during this period by William Dowding, receiver of corn returns, London, and Richard Rowe, inspector. The third official was William Jacob (1762?-1851), traveller and writer. Jacob enjoyed success as a London merchant, before becoming comptroller of corn returns to the board of trade, 1822-1842.
