Administrative / Biographical History

The Adam Smith Club, London , England was founded in 1880, and was devoted to the study and illustration of the works of Adam Smith, in particular, 'The Wealth of Nations'. The founding president of the club was James Bonar, 1852-c1941 . The constitution of the club stipulated that party politics were excluded from debates and that membership was not to be restricted in respect of place, age or politics of prospective members. In 1891 , the club was experimentally open to ladies. Expenses of the meetings were to be met by the monthly subscriptions of the members.
