Scope and Content

Parliamentary papers, draft bills, despatches and memoranda issued by government officials in India and in London regarding prostitution in cantonments. File collected by Henry J Wilson and also comprises correspondence and other supplementary material of his. This includes:

- 'European troops in India'. A manuscript table giving closure status of hospitals in cantonments within Bengal, Punjab, Madras and Bombay. Annotated.13 Sep 1897. Inserted is a copy of a letter to Mr Reid from Henry J Wilson re closure of hospitals, 11 Apr 1898

- copy of a letter from A Nathan, Under Secretary to the Government of India, to the Chief Secretary to the Government of the Punjab re female hospital assistants. Simla, 18 Oct 1898

- leaflet 'Verbatim copy of Memorandum handed to the Viceroy by Mr Wilson in December 1893; replies by [EHH Collen, Major General] Military Department, Government of India.' Calcutta, 1894

- 'Circular memo No. 2, Sanitary / Cantonment Hospitals', from Brigadier General Sir A Gaselee to the Lieutenant Generals commanding the forces, re notification of infection by a contagious disease. Issued Simla, 10 May 1899, received by Henry J Wilson on 27 Oct 1906

- leaflet comprising a statement by WL Gubbins, Surgeon-General, dated 25 Jul 1907, re hospital admission rates of troops. Annotated 'Given by Lord Morley at interview, at India Office, 8 May 1908. Private.'

- 'East India (Contagious Diseases), Return no. 38. List of cantonments given in this return which are not included in abstract No. XIX'. Manuscript table with annotations. 28 May 1909

- printed letter to Governor General in India from Lord Morley re ambiguity in parliamentary returns for examination of women in 39 cantonments, 26 Nov 1909. List of cantonments giving ambiguous replies is inserted. (2 copies with manuscript notes)
