T. E. Nicholas Papers

Scope and Content

Poetry composed by T. E. Nicholas, ranging in date from 1900 - 1967, including work written whilst he was imprisoned at Swansea and Brixton in 1940.

Essays and articles taken from various publications on such subjects as the First World War, Socialism in Wales, Russia and the Second World War, together with parts of an autobiography.

Letters to and from T. E. Nicholas, 1942 - 1964. Amongst the correspondents are George M. Ll. Davies, Gwilym R. Tilsley, Pennar Davies and Goronwy Roberts M.P. Also, a photocopied letter from T. E. Nicholas to Meirion Roberts describing his dream relating to the dust cover for his book, Dryllio'r Delwau.

Miscellaneous papers including a scrapbook of cuttings relating to the arrest of T. E. Nicholas and his son, Islwyn ap Nicholas in 1940. Also, scrapbooks of reviews of the publications of T. E. Nicholas and his son as well as details of the chapels in which T. E. Nicholas preached or lectured.

Administrative / Biographical History

T. E. Nicholas, poet, preacher, lecturer and dentist was born in Llanfyrnach, Pembrokeshire. He was a pacifist during the First World War and was imprisoned during the Second World War for his political beliefs. He was a founder member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and lectured tirelessly on the Soviet Union.

Known by his bardic name, Niclas y Glais, he was a prolific writer of poetry and also regularly contributed articles to such journals as Y Genhinen, Y Darian and Y Cymro.
