'Sportswoman's Manual': chapter on lacrosse

Scope and Content

Contains correspondence of Audrey Levick following the publication of Sportswoman's Manual (1950) edited by Susan Noel which included a chapter on lacrosse written by Margaret Boyd. This correspondence, which includes drafts of some of Levick's letters as well as the incoming letters, relates to her concerns about errors of fact in this published chapter, principally about the history of the game. Many of the letters relate to her attempts to check certain matters of fact and this involved correspondence to trace the whereabouts of the early records of the All England Ladies' Lacrosse Association (AELLA). Other letters with individuals related, for example, to her enquiries about the exact date of the introduction of lacrosse to girls schools in Britain and about the early history of the first lacrosse club, Southern Ladies' Lacrosse Club. Her correspondents include both the editor of Sportswoman's Manual and author of the chapter and with officers of the AELLA.

This file also includes a typescript copy of part of the chapter about the origins of the game incorporating her corrections and suggested amendments for a future edition of Sportswoman's Manual .

Some of the letters to Levick from officers of the AELLA make reference to the forthcoming tour by the United States Womens' Lacrosse Association Touring Team and a proposed demonstration of the game of lacrosse at the Festival of Britain.
