Budapest International Women's Week 1937

Scope and Content

At the invitation of the International Women's Week Committee, the All England Women's Lacrosse Association (AELLA) sent two lacrosse teams to Budapest, Hungary for the week of 5-12 August 1937. This was Budapest's second International Women's Week and attracted about 800 women from around twenty nations. It's primary purpose was "the preservation of peace through understanding the points of view of other peoples" but it also acted as a forum for the exchange of views on subjects deemed to be of particular interest to women, e.g. "art, folklore, sport, schools and welfare centres." The AELLA lacrosse teams played a demonstration match on 9 August in a day-long programme on 'Women Sports'. It is thought to have been the first time that a lacrosse game was played in Hungary. The AELLA tour to Budapest was organised by Jean McFarlane.
Contains press cuttings from Hungarian newspapers reporting on the lacrosse match and other activities held in the week including receptions and entertainments.
Note: a detailed description of the Budapest International Women's Week is in the 2 October 1937 edition of Hockey Field and Lacrosse . See AEWL/6/2/12.
