Administrative / Biographical History

From 1889, Merioneth (or Merionethshire) County Council created and used maps and plans for council offices, schools, hospitals, police stations and other buildings in the county. Earlier plans of railways, roads, harbours and bridges, deposited with the Clerk of the Peace, were also transferred to the County Council when it took over the administrative functions of the Court of Quarter Sessions. The Welsh Church Commission was set up in 1920 to take over the management of Church property and distribution of revenue. The Commission's duties included the collection of tithes; this involved liaison with the County Council as a rating authority.
